Guadalupe Guevara Díaz was arrested in Long Island (NY) on suspicion of endangering her 3 and 9-year-old children by leaving them in a parked car for about 30 minutes while shopping at a mall yesterday, during very low temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), yesterday was the coldest day in the region so far this fall.
County police Suffolk responded to a 911 call in the Smith Haven Mall parking lot and found the two children in a turned off Nissan Pathfinder car around 6 p.m. last night, with a temperature of 37F (3C).
They allege that Guevara-Díaz (27) left them alone in the car while shopping. Police did not release any information about the children’s condition when they were found, but they appeared to be fine. They were handed over to a friend of the family and the Child Protective Services (CPS).
Guevara-Díaz is expected to be arraigned this afternoon in First District Court in Central Islip, he reported. NBC News.
