MIAMI, Florida – Hundreds of voters from Florida, where early voting begins next Monday, they have denounced that the official envelopes to return the ballot by mail to the electoral authorities are arriving already sealed.

The complaints have been filed in the Leon County, Northwest Florida, with a large majority of Democratic registered voters (116,374), which is double that of Republicans (57.826), according to data from that county’s electoral authority.

Mark Earley, Leon County Supervisor of Elections, noted that they have received “hundreds of phone calls” reporting the matter and that probably some people have had the same problem and have not reported it.

He stressed that considering that 80,000 ballots have been sent for voting by mail, the situation “is not horrible, but it is certainly not insignificant.”

Early explained that the ballots have been “exposed to moisture” in the office’s processing facility or when they were delivered to voters, who he urged to request a new one.

Mass voting

Voting by mail in Florida has been massive, with more than 2.4 million ballots returned as of Saturday, out of a total of 3.3 million sent by electoral authorities.

María Simpler, a Colombian who became a citizen in the United States, pointed out that in the 10 years that she has been voting, she has never received a sealed ballot or with a torn barcode, as other voters have denounced.

Simpler said it “is problematic, given President Donald Trump’s criticism of voting by mail,” as reported by the public radio station WFSU of Florida State University in Tallahassee, the state capital and seat of the government of the Republican Ron DeSantis.
