[ENT] Xherdan Shaqiri’s Liverpool future decided as transfer deadline approaches

Xherdan Shaqiri looks set to stay at Liverpool with the club unable to find a buyer for the fringe player before the end of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old has barely featured under Jurgen Klopp in recent times, and has been left out of the last two squads altogether amid interest from the likes of Roma and Lazio.

But Liverpool have always maintained they would only sell the player permanently rather than allow him to leave on loan, and have not found a club willing to stump up the cash.

And according to the Evening Standard, unless a suitable offer comes in at the very last minute before Monday evening’s deadline Shaqiri will remain at Anfield until at least January.

It is also believed fellow squad players Marjo Grujic and Harry Wilson will also be staying following a lack of interest from other clubs.

Shaqiri was an important part of the first-team when he first joined Liverpool from Stoke in 2018, making 30 appearances in his first season with a return of six goals.

Since then, however, he has found game-time much harder to come by, and made only seven Premier League appearances in the title-winning 2019-20 campaign.

Klopp appeared to suggest earlier this week that Shaqiri was set for an exit after he was left out of the Carabao Cup squad to take on Arsenal, saying: “Some were not involved. It is the time of the year when some things happen in the background and you have to react. That is what we did.”

It also does not look likely that there will be any more incomings at Liverpool before 11pm, with the club said to be happy with the business they have done so far in bringing in Konstantinos Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota.
